Join us on the first of our Biomes Forays as we explore the unique fungal life thriving in Alabama's longleaf pine forest and mixed forest, shaped by the cycle of fire and renewal. Learn how controlled and wild burns create fertile ground for pyrophylic (the fire-loving) fungi. Expect the ascomyces to play a prominent role.

Location is at Lake Chinnabee in the Talladega National Forest. There is a $3 parking fee per vehicle. Please carpool if you can! If you do not find enough parking in the main parking lot, continue following the road along the lake and there is parking spots along the road.

Depending on the group size, it may be split into two parties. The traditional hiking trail towards devilden's waterfall is not a beginner's hike. Instead of taking the hiking trail, we may walk back up the road from the parking to access the burn area.

This event will be led by Spencer Crowley.
